Mortal Kombat II

Karl Urban's entry as Johnny Cage gives this sequel its central structural bet: folding the franchise's most self-aware character into a story that now has to sustain not just a tournament but a war. McQuoid scales the threat outward — Shao Kahn's campaign against Earthrealm replaces the contained bracket logic of the first film with something closer to an invasion picture, though the fighting remains the primary currency. Jessica McNamee and Josh Lawson return alongside a broadened roster of champions who spend much of the film in conflict with each other before the external stakes consolidate. The series positions itself here as spectacle-action built on game-faithful brutality, where the mythology is load-bearing scaffolding for the choreography.
