The Walking Dead: Dead City

2023

A spinoff that reassigns the most complicated pairing in The Walking Dead's long run — Maggie and Negan, whose history includes an act of violence she has never forgiven — and then drops them into Manhattan, which the series treats as a sealed-off ruin governed by neither law nor clear threat hierarchy. Eli Jorné builds the show around a single extended mission into that island, using the geography of decayed infrastructure as both obstacle and atmosphere. Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan carry the dramatic weight: the mission requires a working alliance, and the alliance requires both characters to hold their history in suspension without quite setting it down.

David Simon's Baltimore series runs both sides of the drug trade in parallel, tracking detectives and dealers through the same institutional machinery until the symmetry becomes the argument. Built from an ensemble that grows season by season to absorb the docks, the schools, the city hall, and the newsroom, it operates less like a procedural than like a novel in the nineteenth-century sense: accumulative, unhurried, interested in systems over heroes. Dominic West, Lance Reddick, Sonja Sohn, and Wendell Pierce anchor an early cast that the show gradually decentralizes, redistributing attention as each new institution enters the frame.
