Die Hard

1988

One barefoot cop, separated from his gun and his shoes, against a building full of armed professionals: McTiernan turns the siege thriller into an exercise in controlled asymmetry, pitting a wisecracking New York detective who makes every wrong decision first against a hostage operation run with the precision of a corporate takeover. The Nakatomi Plaza becomes a vertical map — floors, elevator shafts, and air ducts as a tactical grammar — and the film uses that geography to keep the odds visibly, almost arithmetically, stacked. Alan Rickman's Hans Gruber sets the register: a villain who finds the whole situation faintly amusing, which gives Bruce Willis's desperation somewhere to press against.
