Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

2018

Miles Morales gets his spider-bite in a film that treats the origin story as a premise to move through rather than a destination to linger on. The interest is structural: Persichetti, Ramsey, and Rothman build the film around a collider accident that pulls half a dozen Spider-people from incompatible dimensions into Brooklyn, each rendered in a visually distinct idiom — anime, noir, slapstick cartoon — that the film holds in the frame simultaneously without resolving the collision into a single house style. Shameik Moore plays Miles as someone still working out who he is; Jake Johnson's older, frayed Peter Parker functions as a foil who's run out of room to grow. The animation does the genre argument: form as content, style as character.

Blade Runner

1982

Los Angeles, 2019: a city of permanent rain and neon, built in layers, the upper registers gleaming while street level rots. Ridley Scott constructs the film as a noir procedural set inside this world — Deckard, a retired hunter of synthetic humans called replicants, is pressed back into service to track four of them before they find what they came for. The case moves through the city's geography the way classic detective work moves through social strata. What distinguishes it formally is how much the world does: the production design carries load that most films assign to exposition, leaving Harrison Ford and Rutger Hauer to work in a space already dense with implication.

The Matrix

1999

A computer hacker living a double life — drone programmer by day, wanted criminal by night — gets pulled through a door that can't be closed again, into a world where the reality he's been navigating turns out to be a rendered environment. The Wachowskis build the film as an action thriller whose genre machinery carries a nested-reality premise: every fight sequence is also an argument about what bodies can do when the physics are negotiable. Reeves, Fishburne, and Moss work in a register that's cool without being detached, and Hugo Weaving's antagonist operates on a different plane of composure entirely. The choreography and the concept arrive as a single package.

Hoppers

2026

A girl slips her consciousness into a robotic animal body and steps into a world she thought she understood — Hoppers builds its adventure around that central gimmick and treats the animal kingdom as genuinely alien territory rather than a backdrop for cute behavior. Daniel Chong structures the film as a discovery narrative that keeps widening its own scope: each hop into a new body reframes what Mabel thinks she knows, until the animal world begins to look less like nature and more like a system with its own logic and secrets. The animation has work to do here, rendering both the robotic vessels and their organic counterparts in a register where the strangeness of the premise stays legible.

Hope

2026

A remote South Korean coastal village is under siege from something the locals can't quite name or agree on — and that collective failure of perception is where Na Hong-jin plants his film. The director of *The Wailing* builds *Hope* as a genre puzzle that passes through procedural investigation, creature panic, and something closer to cosmological dread, each register undercutting the one before it. Police chief Bum-seok and officer Sung-ae arrive to manage a crisis that keeps expanding its own terms. With a cast spanning Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, Hoyeon, and Alicia Vikander, it operates on Na's characteristic principle: the more clearly characters think they see, the worse their decisions become.

Avengers: Doomsday

2026

The Russo brothers return to the franchise they last handled with *Endgame*, this time assembling characters from three distinct Marvel universes on a collision course. Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Chris Hemsworth are joined by Pedro Pascal in what the premise frames as a crossover operating at a larger structural scale than the series has previously attempted — the threat here cuts across continuities rather than converging on a single timeline. Built on the brothers' established preference for ensemble action that sequences its set-pieces around character geography, the film positions itself as an event in the formal sense: a film whose architecture depends on which version of each hero the audience is watching, and why that distinction matters.
